Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs is the solo project of Orlando Dinosaur, an Oxford-bred twentysomething whose hummable dance music combines electro pop, euro house, and two-step beats. With its UK Garage influenced beats, arpeggiated analog synths and indie vocals, Dinosaur, in my opinion, has created one of the freshest sounds in the electronic scene since Jaar. I had a chance to see him perform live back in November and was completely blown away by his ability to get every single person in the club raging.

Connan Mockasin is back with his aural experimentations; Dissecting, inverting, and dissembling the very structures of the pop song itself, creating something endlessly inventive and completely beguiling, all at the same time. This willingness to toy with the edges of musical convention is showcased to startling effect in “Faking Jazz Together”, its typically opaque title belying a gorgeous, leisurely amble through an enchanted forest of lush psychedelia, complete with dreamy guitar licks, liquefied salsa rhythms and Mockasin’s trademark alien vocals, sounding like a transmission from another cosmos, ghostly yet strangely affecting all at once. It is a very curious thing that whenever something/someone comes out of the blue and shows you something that you thought you already knew in a completely new and unexpected way, the true extent of the impact can only be realized in retrospect. As the dust the settles in and Want You In My Soul grows older for the ears, it becomes clear that this soulful ( calling this track soulful is a profound understatement ) and mesmerizing track is one of the best songs that 2011 delivered.
