Retro / Grade

Retro/Grade is Italo-disco duo consisting of Serge Santiago and Tom Neville. You might have heard Tom Neville’s brilliant remixes of Mika and The Ting Tings, both released couple of years ago. They’re one of 2010′s most promising up-comers and their Italo-disco revival attempts haven’t gone unnoticed. I believe their name comes from the astronomical term Retrograde motion which fits perfectly with their musical vision because while every other producer is in a search of new musical styles, Retro/Grade is progressing backwards in time exploring modern Italo-Disco.

Why don’t you?

Today’s songs are specifically for indefatigable clubbers. They’re vivacious club anthems that boost your energy and aid you get through the week. Why Don’t You is a remake of Peggy Lee’s 1947 version of the 1936 song Why Don’t You Do Right? by the Serbian duo Gramophonedzie.
Spaced Invader is a tune I came across in Ibiza and it simply pours out pure energy with its vibrant beats mixed with full of life vocals(w/ a Jamaican accent). I personally think both songs are perfect for clubbin’ due to their hedonistic and “Art mocking Life” nature.

The best is yet to come

Released from 430 West Records in 2000, Blackwater is an epic house tune by Octave One. The detroit techno inspired song opens with a fabulous string intro and emits feel-good vibes that “flow like the sunshine” for almost 9 minutes. Carl Kennedy “modernizes” the classic with his interpretation. While Kennedy’s version does not differ greatly from the original, Kennedy’s version is less organic and more electro-ish than the original.

Future Classics
I’m never wrong. One time, I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.

Henrik Schwarz is best known for his deep jazzy arrangements and clear pure sounds. Every single sound in his productions can be heard clearly. In his tribute to the King of Pop, Schwarz blends the world´s of Disco Emotion, House Building and Detroit Technoicism like no one else and not often heard anymore in this style, depths, complexness and rhythimc power.
Second song of the day , Who Is He (Henrik Schwarz Edit), is yet another tribute to legend Bill Withers. Sharkslayer remix incorporates more energy and quirky pulses into Schwarz’s version giving the tune an overall dancefloor friendly vibe. For more soulful house, check out Schwarz’s remix of I’m feeling you.

The young, the good and the faithful

Hey I found a whistle that hangs like a charm
and when my noose is tied I could blow it
and fall down into your arms
15 centuries of dissolution and grief
to return a yellow trickster and a thiefYeah I found a whistle that works every time
that’s when the trail escapes to nowhere
and the flood erases the crime
such conviction
to paint all the wall with the blood
of the young and the faithful and the goodYeah I found a whistle as thin as a sheet
to split the dumbness of a vision
between asleep and a sleep
tiny axes
repeatedly raising the flag
all ignored, real emotion’s such a dragHey I’ve got a pistol that’s aimed at your heart
and on dark nights when the moon is right
I could show you
the head attached with a scarf
aerophane sorceress, at home obeying the fates
when it’s gone, has it gone all the way? This time
found a whistle
that works every time
Yeah, I found a whistle
that works
hangs like a charm
Yeah, found a whistle
that works every time
Yeah, I found a whistle
that works
closes my mind every time
a whistle
I’ve got it,
I’ve got it,
this time
I have to admit MGMT’s second album, Congratulations, took me by surprise. Instead of selling out after the commercial success of their debut album, Oracular Spectacular, or failing to achieve the quality of their debut album, the duo have apparently matured profoundly and gave birth to a very introverted & darker sounding production. I Found A Whistle, with its typical MGMT style layout (one recurring theme/chorus differently emphasized every time through + indecipherable obscure lyrics), is the hidden gem of their latest album.

The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living

Max Cooper should be on every techno lover’s watch-list. He has a very distinct sound that can be felt through all of his releases. He manages to mix chopped up loops of vocals, deep steady bass with high frequency chaotic beats and still gives the production a clean pure feel. You can grab Max Cooper’s Symphonica from here.

My personal favorite remix from Jori Hulkkonen’s “I Am Dead” release. Hercules & the Love Affair version is also noteworthy.
